In addition to Science and Beauty, Art is one the foundational pillars upon which Retrouvé is built.,
We are honored to highlight artists whose work inspires us. Art, Science, and Beauty exist synergistically and inform one another, and the many ways in which they intersect create the foundation for the genesis and evolution of Retrouvé. We recently commissioned celebrated LA-based abstract and pop artist Kelly Styne for her creative take on Retrouvé. Through her work with acrylic and mixed media on canvas, she marries a fusion of order and chaos, boldness and subtlety —all with an underlying graceful tension that is representative of her personal style. Kelly serves on the board of the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA and uses her pop textual art to spark positive conversations about mental health and to share a message of positivity and humor. We had the opportunity to speak with Kelly about her art and our exclusive collaboration. We hope that you will be as moved by Kelly’s work as we are.
How long have you been painting, and how did you first get started?
I have always worked in the creative fields (film, editorial, fashion) and when our youngest was heading off to college, I enrolled in an art class just to do something creative until I figured out what I wanted to do for my next chapter(s). I made about ten paintings and showed a friend who a) bought one and b) introduced me to a gallery owner and thus, my artistic career was hatched.
From where do you draw inspiration and how do you decide upon the themes for your artwork? Please share with us about your work at the UCLA Resnick Center and how that informs your art?
I draw inspiration from the colors and patterns in my head and surroundings. My mother committed suicide almost 20 years ago, and I since became involved with the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital (Mental Health at UCLA). My hope is that my textual paintings will spark real conversations about mental health and share a message of positivity and humor. This is also a way for me to continue to heal and grow through a creative outlet.
Do you have a favorite piece or one that is most meaningful to you, and if so, would you share why?
My very first painting is still my favorite. It is called Chicken Enchilada, and it made me feel that anything was possible. I am not sure how I came up with the title, but it opened up a whole new world for me.
What do you most want people to know about Kelly Styne the artist?
I am a fairly open book but am a work-in-progress! Each day, I continue to hopefully evolve and discover new ways to contribute in a positive way.
Please tell us about your support of important causes through the sale of your hoodies and T-shirts and how people can find them to purchase.
Several people had commented about how fun and colorful some of my art is. Soon after, I was approached by a branding company to put my art on apparel. Once I decided to move forward with the hoodies, it was important to me that a portion of the profits be donated to various charities I support. Of course, RNPH is at the top of my list; but, now with the current state of the world, there are many new causes that need attention. All art and hoodies are available on my website: kellystyneart.com.
When did you first start using Retrouvé, and what is your favorite Retrouvé product? How have you found Retrouvé to be helpful for your skin?
I was introduced to Retrouvé products about five years ago, when the brand launched. I have always loved creams – my gorgeous grandmother always taught me the importance of skincare and shared her favorites with me. I spent a lot of time in the sun on the junior tennis circuit and really damaged my skin. Once I started using Retrouvé products, people noticed a big difference in the texture and tone of my face and neck. Call me forever hooked! I truly love all of the products, but my desert island must-have is Revitalizing Eye Concentrate Skin Hydrator.
Please share with us your idea behind the Art Science Beauty artwork.
Ever since I was fortunate enough to meet the founder of Retrouvé, Jami Heidegger, it was love at first sight. I was so impressed by her dedication, knowledge, and passion regarding inner and outer beauty. She is truly a game changer and on the forefront of wellness. I was blown away that a woman I admire so dearly was drawn to my artwork and had an appreciation of what fuels me. We have a mutual passion for the importance of self-care. Jami came up with the idea of doing a collaboration with my art and Retrouvé’s tagline – Art. Science. Beauty. She stressed the importance of bringing positivity and brightness, which have been in short supply of late.
